Golden Eagles Win Their Third Straight Game

Box Score

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team remained unbeaten with another strong defensive showing on the road.

The Golden Eagles got a pair of first-half goals from Derrek Horn and made them stand up in a 2-1 victory over Cal Baptist Monday in Riverside. Cal State L.A. (3-0) has now posted one-goal wins over Cal State San Marcos, Vanguard and Cal Baptist.

Cal Baptist fell to 3-1 after suffering its first defeat of the season. The game, originally scheduled at Cal State L.A., was moved to Cal Baptist because the Golden Eagles' new grass field is not yet ready for play.

The game was a hard-fought defensive struggle that featured only a few scoring opportunities. Cal Baptist held a 7-3 advantage in shots, including a 4-0 edge in the second half. Tobias Hummel made three saves to record the win in goal for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. was credited with only three shots, but all three were on goal and two of them resulted in goals. Horn scored his first two goals of the season, while Kristian Gaustad picked up assists on both scores.

The game was scoreless until the 31st minute when Cal State L.A. converted on a free kick. Gaustad delivered the free kick that was saved by Cal Baptist goalie Jeff Redinger. The rebound, though, came to Horn, who knocked it into the net for the first goal of the game.

The Golden Eagles made it 2-0 about eight minutes later when Gaustad set up Horn for his second goal of the contest. Horn headed in a cross from Gaustad to give Cal State L.A. a two-goal lead.

The Lancers got their lone goal in the 60th minute to tighten things up, but Cal State L.A.'s defense stayed strong the rest of the way to preserve the lead.

Cal State L.A. had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks, including a 5-0 edge in the second half. Cal Baptist was whistled for 20 fouls to 10 for Cal State L.A. and the Lancers received a pair of yellow cards down the stretch.

Cal State L.A. will open California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Friday with a road match at Cal State San Bernardino.
